Workshops

Download the Workshop brochure (PDF)Ideal for storage or to use as a workroom in the garden, the workshop range is available in any size, and comes with double doors as standard for easy access.

Our buildings are of the highest specification around. The uprights are spaced close together for added strength (no more than 450mm (1’6”) apart on the floor, and 600mm (2’) on the walls). The building boasts an extremely sturdy roof thanks to the use of substantial timbers and our unique roof design.

All our buildings are constructed entirely from PAR timbers (planed all round) eliminating the use of sawn. All windows are beaded and then sealed with silicon for additional weather protection.

Key wooden Workshop features include:

Quality timber
We use quality 4th redwood timber, which is a higher grade than most other manufacturers. It has minimal imperfections compared with its white wood counterpart, and all our wood comes from well managed, sustainable forests.

Fully customisable
The doors and windows can be positioned anywhere in our buildings at no extra cost, to suit your garden.

Higher eaves and taller doors
The workshop ranges have increased height inside, providing additional storage space, and a bigger feel. They also come with a generous 1880mm (6’2”) high door opening, to give extra headroom.

Heavy duty felt
The building is supplied with heavier weight 38kg green mineral felt as standard, which can provide weather protection for in excess of 5 years.

Gutter-ready roof design
The side of the roof is finished with a flat fascia and drip rail for the easy attachment of guttering.

Dealing direct with us the manufacturer

You not only cut out the middle man, ensuring more of your money goes into the product, but you get the flexibility to alter virtually any aspect of the building design, just ask! (See a few of our custom designs)

Have it your way
Every customer is different, so we have created four window designs for you to select from. Each design comes with a different amount of doors and windows.

Should you require more windows, or perhaps a verandah, simply add the cost indicated on the price list. You can configure the building exactly how you want, to suit your garden. Speak to a member of our sales team about all the available options.

Planning consent and building regulations

In most cases you do not need planning permission to install a Phoenix garden building, providing it meets the following criteria:

Rules governing outbuildings apply to sheds, greenhouses and garages as well as other ancillary garden buildings such as swimming pool rooms, sauna cabins, gyms and many other kinds of structure for purpose incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house.

Under new regulations that came into effect on 1st October 2008 outbuildings are now considered to be permitted development, not needing planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions:

  • No outbuilding on land forward of a wall forming the principal elevation.
  • Outbuildings and garages to be single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5 metres and maximum overall height of 4 metres with a dual pitched roof or 3 metres for any other roof.
  • Maximum height of 2.5 metres when less than 2 metres from the boundary.
  • No more than half the area of land around the ‘original house’ would be covered by additions or other buildings.
  • No more than 3 square metres and more than 20 metres form the house in National Parks, the Broads, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Sites.
  • Within the cartilage of listed buildings any outbuilding will require planning permission.

The term ‘original house’ means the house as it was first built or as it stood on 1 July 1948.

These are guidelines, and if you are in any doubt about compliance you should contact your local planning authority before any work commences. For a fixed fee we can provide you with 1:50 scaled elevation and plan drawings to accompany a planning application.

If you need to apply for planning permission, but wish to place a deposit on a building in order to secure it at the quoted price, you can do so. Normally all deposits are non-refundable, but we take planning as an exception. If you place an order and then planning permission is refused, we will refund you deposit minus our administration costs.

Available options and services

Felt tiles
Apart from giving a nicer visual appearance, felt tiles are a lot more durable than our standard felt roofs. They carry a life expectancy in excess of 15 years and are available in slate grey or red. Other colours are obtainable on special order.

Wall membrane
The walls of our buildings can be supplied with a damp proof membrane between the framework and cladding. It allows the timber to breathe but prevents moisture from entering the building through the walls. We would recommend this option if the building is to be used for storage of delicate items, or is eventually to be insulated and lined.

Superior exterior finish
The exterior of the building can be hand finished with two coats of Teknos royal water-based treatment. This is an environmentally friendly preservative that provides up to 5yrs protection for your building. It is available in a variety of colours, and can also be provided on supply only basis.

Exterior cladding
We offer a choice of four exterior claddings which each help to achieve a desired look. The 16mm shiplap is a machine finished board, that provides a modern look with minimal maintenance.  The 22mm loglap gives the appearance of half-round logs that would be associated with Scandinavian log cabins. The 25mm shiplap provides a robust finish.  35mm x 200mm tanalised rustic board is our premium cladding in thickness and longevity.

Guttering
We can provide guttering for all our buildings. We can route gutters into an existing drain, soak away, or a water butt. Gutters are available in half-round or square-line formats, and a variety of colours and sizes.

Glazing options
We offer a choice of glazing options to add a little bit of character. There is a selection of four different glass sizes and styles. At an additional cost the windows can be fitted with Georgian wooden inserts, diamond or Georgian lead lights. If you are likely to be working in the building you may wish to have several of the windows converted to top-hung opening casements for airflow.

Timber bearers
We can provide timber bearers, to be laid beneath the floor of our buildings. They lift the building up and help to create an airflow beneath. This means your floor dries out quicker, and isn’t constantly sitting in the damp, ensuring the longevity of your building.

Ground preparation, advice and drawings

We can provide all the necessary groundwork in preparation for your building. Alternatively we can supply detailed base plan drawings free of charge and consult with a local ground worker of your choice to ensure the site is prepared suitably.
